The charity H & H CVC are supporting in 2009...

Norwood Trust Ltd

The North-East Cheshire Society for mentally Handicapped Children & Adults

Every year we hold the 'Peaks & Dales Charity Run'

Proceeds from this event and some of the other events we hold throuout the year, are collected for 'our charity'. Club members like to know where monies raised by their efforts go. So we generally pick a local charity which will benefit from our efforts. This year it's Norwood Trust.

Objects of the charity and principal activities

The principal activity / objective of Norwood Trust is to provide accommodation for adults with learning disabilities both whose parents are no longer able to care for them and those being discharged from residential care into the community. The trust also aims to provide special treatment and vocational training to enable the residents to develop their maximum potential as individuals in order to give them as much control over their own lives as possible.

Norwood Trust Limited was established in 1985 and its aim was to provide accommodation for adults with learning disabilities. The initial project involved the purchase of a large Victorian house in Marple, which was to become the family home for 10 adults. The intention was to create a family atmosphere where individuals could be encouraged to develop their potential and learn to take more control of their own lives.

Within 4 years of start up the Trust had conceived the idea of building a bungalow in the grounds of Norwood to provide for 4 adults who had the confidence to live a semi-independent existence within easy reach of support and by early 1990 this was fully operational. The charity has now expanded its operations and now provides 24-hour support to 4 adults who live in their own property in Marple.

The charity's focus is very much on encouraging individuals to develop to their potential and lead a full and active life in the community, activities therefore tend to be on a small scale with no annual events or fundraising activities. This is to minimise the impression of the residents and tenants being dependent on the charity of others and therefore increase their self-esteem. The majority of the charity's income is from residential fees paid by local social services with the balance coming from occasional donations.

The charity is currently helping adults in a variety of ways, both on a one to one and group bases, with several people currently being employed on sheltered placements in the area. Others are encouraged to aid in Household activities in a very practical way such as gardening at Norwood.
